Zakat
What Zakat is, who it is for, and how Lifeline makes sure yours reaches people who are eligible to receive it.
Pay your ZakatWhat is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: a yearly duty to give 2.5% of the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, once it is above a minimum amount called the nisab. It purifies wealth and makes sure part of it reaches people in need.
Who pays Zakat
Zakat is due from an adult Muslim who has owned wealth at or above the nisab for one full lunar year.
Debts you must pay now are taken off. Your home, car and personal belongings are not counted.
The nisab
We use the silver nisab: the value of 612.36 grams of silver, updated with live prices. It is the lower of the two standards, so more people pay and more people receive.
Who can receive Zakat
The Quran (9:60) names eight groups: the poor; people in need; those who collect and distribute Zakat; those whose hearts are to be reconciled; freeing those in bondage; people in debt; in the cause of Allah; and the stranded traveller.
