Sudan’s war enters its fourth year with about 14 million people uprooted

About 14 million people, roughly a quarter of Sudan’s population, have been forced from their homes since fighting began on 15 April 2023 (UNHCR). About 9 million of them are displaced inside Sudan, and 4.4 million have crossed into neighbouring countries, mainly Chad, South Sudan and Egypt (UNHCR).

Hunger remains widespread. Some 21 million people face acute food insecurity, including 6.3 million at emergency level (FAO).

Health care has been badly hit. WHO says it has verified more than 200 attacks on health care in three years, and that over 40% of the population needs urgent health assistance (WHO).
